How soon should I start wearing maternity clothes?

I'm 9 wks. preg. and some of my skirts and pants are feeling tight already up to the point where the leave a thin red mark on my abd. I'm not big enough to fill a bit maternity clothes so what would be ok for me to wear because I don't want to be uncomfortable either.
Is there anything for in-betweens?
Oh and I forgot to mention that my non-strech tops don't fit so I'm just wearing strechy ones.

When I got pregnant I was in a size 5 everyone is different. My doctor did tell me that under no circumstances was I to wear anything tight. So i went out and bought some jogging out fits, gaucho pants, big t shirts, anything that was baggy and would last a while… I am now 6 months along and I think I started wearing maternity clothes when I hit my 5 month mark. I went to the motherhood store and got stuff from them they have alot to choose from in the smaller range…

You start to wear maternity clothes when you want. If your other clothes wont fit then go buy some. That’s what i did and i was much more comfortable.

Just wear what’s comfortable!! I was pregnant back in the 80’s when having a "baby bump" wasn’t fashionable!

    Enjoy it!!

just get a size a couple of sizes larger than yours, if you won’t fit into real maternity clothing. don’t wear really tight clothes or you might actually cause damage to your unborn child. hope i helped!

Wear maternity clothes as soon as you like! I started wearing bigger sizes, then went to maternity clothes. Wear whats comfortable. Sometimes you dont get big enough to have to wear clothing marked "maternity". I didnt with my first two pregnancies and now with this one i was wearing maternity pants in the first trimester lol!

Well if your clothes fits a little tight I think you should wear clothes that is a little lose from you stomach, you don’t want to squeeze that baby!!
and i think you should start wearing maternity clothes when you are showing more.

    Hey-Congrats by the way :)
Uhh you know just head to Goodys or Wal-Mart and get you some tops in a size larger..My sister-in-law has done that and she’s got some cute little tops and stuff like that they she can also wear after the baby..If you dont care to shop at second hand shops or consignement shops then head there also..You can grab a few things that are less expensive but still look fashionable..Just be comfortable..Oh and the comment about you hurting the baby..Dont take it to heart :)
    Good Luck!!

There are some places with a line of maternity clothes specifically for early pregnancy. Hope this helps with your "in-betweens"!

If your jeans have button and button-hole then buy some 1/2 inch wide elastic and make a big loop in the buttonhole to pop over the button.
Start to wear loose fitting tops and are long enough to hide the jeans fly. If you don’t put on any particular weight on your hips then you may be able to wear your favourite jeans all the way through your pregnancy using elastic buttonholes – which will button-up under your tummy bump.
Stop wearing any skirts or jeans which do up around your stomach as you may cause yourself unsightly scar-marks just like one of my daughters did – she now has 1/2 inch wide stretch marks all over her tummy and can only have them removed by plastic surgery.
The present fashion is for smock tops which you may well be able to wear for quite a few months – make sure you buy long ones which are at least hip length.
Make sure you are wearing a decent supporting bra, preferably underwired to help keep your breasts firm.
Make sure you moisturise your tummy every day to help avoid stretch marks.

I started wearing maternity clothes within the first month. My clothes were getting tight on me and just didn’t look right as I never had hips until I got pregnant. When you go to the maternity store, try it on before you buy it. And they have a tummy extender that you wear when you try on the clothes to see if they will fit in 3 months. Also, you can always buy non-maternity clothes in bigger sizes. But, again try them on before you buy as regular clothes do not always fit your changing body as well as maternity clothes.

It all depends on when you start to feel uncomfortable. I have 2 daughters, 7 & 3. For my first pregnancy I had no idea what to expect & was so excited about the baby that I "couldn’t wait" to wear maternity clothes. I was actually about 3 months or so before I had to stop wearing my clothes. I was quite further along with my second before I had to wear maternity clothes. I was between 5 & 6 months for my second. I carried smaller for my second baby, who wound up being almost 2 lbs. larger. Believe me, 2 lbs. doesn’t sound like a big difference, but you deliver a baby that’s 6 lbs. & then one that is 1 oz. shy of 8 lbs. & that is a HUGE difference!! I did wear maternity, alot of cute dresses & tops, but I also wore alot of linen & cotton pants that would stretch ( bought a size or 2 larger than my size). I used to like to wear leggins with my husband’s button down shirts. Anything with a stretchable waistline worked. I did also get things just a size larger or so-not maternity. Stay away from heels, they kill your feet & back. I lived in flip flops, cute sandals and sneakers. You’ll have fun with this experience, I loved being pregnant…I loved the idea of pregnancy! Good luck & best wishes!

You can wear them as soon as it’s uncomfortable to wear your own… I bought all my maternity clothes at Old Navy because I had to dress up for work…they actually have really stylish maternity clothing. The pants, etc, have adjustable waists on the inside, so you can keep the elastic all the way in at first and let it out as you go. Best thing is they stay looking "tailored" so very professional. Their casual clothing is also very comfy and reasonable. If your other things are starting to get a little tight, there’s no reason to buy a new wardrobe a size up and then still have to buy maternity…just get the transition stuff and wear it all the way through. I also wore mine right after until I dropped the baby weight.
The other thing you can do if you want to continue wearing your own clothing for a bit is buy a "bella band". They sell them at Nordstrom’s for $30 in quite a few colors and you can find them online for about $26. You wear it over your unbuttoned/unzipped pants and it looks like a cami under your shirt, but keeps your pants from falling off. Or from flashing anybody. :)

you can buy leggings and baby doll tops. Sweat pants/yoga pants are always comfortable to wear with some regular Tshirt. Go buy the men’s undershirt at old navy or at target. Those are comfortable for being in between size. I know how you feel. I’m too big for my old regular clothes but too small for maternity pants even though I am 24 weeks.

You should start wearing maternity clothes when you need to. I began wearing maternity pants during my first trimester. I started wearing maternity shirts my second trimester.

Congratulations! What an exciting time. A quick inexpensive solution for you right now is Ingrid and Isabel’s Bella Bands. It is a soft cotton & lycra band (which comes in many colors & a choice of with or without lace). You place the band over your tummy & your non-maternity jean. Now you can leave your jeans unbuttoned & zipped. The Bella Band keeps jeans in place & the undone pant hidden. This band looks like another layer of clothing. They are wonderful! You can go on their website: http://www.ingridandisabel.com. You can find a retailer near you. Go try them on! You will wear this item during and after delivery. You will love them!

  • kradjianm says:

if your skirts and pants fit everywhere else you can do the rubber band trick- run a rubber band through the button hole and then back around the button. Get some Bella Bands and wear them over your regular pants and skirts, unbuttoned, it just gives the look of layering your tops, which is in style right now anyway. I did this until the 4th or 5th month at which point I just went for it and did all maternity clothes which by then I could really start to fill up.
